 The Numerical Tank is to use advanced hydrodynamic theoretical model, sophisticated numerical algorithms and systematically compiled high-performance computing software, combining with advanced computer and Internet conditions to carry out the virtual experiments of the fluid dynamic response process on ship and the marine structure in different marine environments. Thus it will be able to meet the needs of ships and marine engineering on research, design and applications of engineering after having been tested and proved right.

The Numerical Tank project is to be carried out in stages, including potential flow simulation, Reynolds-averaged numerical simulation, large-eddy simulation, direct numerical simulation and so on, all featuring flowing models’ simulations. The numerical tank can not only realize the function of towing pond, vacant water hole, sea keeping pond, maneuverability pond for flowing models’ tests and wind wave pool for marine engineering, but can also take advantage of its merit, i.e. the digitalization of dynamic action of ships’ fine flow to reveal the causes of fluid flow phenomena.
 
The high-performance computing software, self-developed by the Numerical Tank, can give full play to high-performance supercomputers in China to maintain their leading advantages internationally. Its fine observation of the flow field goes far beyond the physical pool and achieves the ultimate simulation of the marine structures in actual size. It also helped to realize the “target watching” in the flow field around the whole structure so as to simulate the actual ship sailing on the ocean. Combining with ocean wave’s weather forecast and numerical forecast, ships will produce different dynamic responses when sailing on different routes. Thus we can choose a better development of energy-saving, safe and comfortable routes.
